HEDGE FUNDS REVEALED

The world can thank Australia for the creation of Hedge funds, for it was an Australian born American, Alfred Winslow Jones, who created the first modern hedge fund. The original concept was to reduce investment risk by essentially "hedging your bets". It is ironic therefore that over 6 decades later, hedge funds are perceived to have contributed considerably to the demise of global finance via over leveraged complex derivatives trading strategies. Hedge funds, now more than ever, seem to be attracting the attention of not only investors but also the television media and financial broadsheets as well. New Zealand Asset Management's Phil Crotty will tomorrow explain the nature of hedge fund investing, the good the bad and the ugly.

Philip joined NZAM in July 2008 as Managing Director of NZAM Asia. He has lived in Asia and worked in senior positions within the financial services industry since 1980. Prior to joining NZAM he held senior investment banking positions in Deutsche Bank from 1990-2004 based in Singapore and Hong Kong where he was Head of Global Corporate Finance in Asia, and CLSA from 2005-2008 based in Hong Kong, where he was Head of Investment Banking.
